Practical Test
What is the practical driving test?
The practical test checks that you can drive safely and confidently on real roads, follow the rules, and react properly to other road users.
The test is run by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
You must have passed your theory test before taking it.
How long is the test?
⏱️ About 40 minutes (around 70 minutes if you have special requirements)
What happens in the test?
Eyesight check
-
You’ll be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres
-
If you fail this, the test ends immediately
Vehicle safety questions (“Show me, tell me”)
-
One “tell me” question before driving
-
One “show me” question while driving
Examples:
-
“Tell me how you’d check the brakes are working”
-
“Show me how to demist the windscreen”
Getting one wrong = 1 minor fault, not a fail.

The key is control, observation, and accuracy — not speed.
Independent driving

-
Following a sat nav, or
-
Following road signs
You won’t fail for going the wrong way — it’s about safe driving, not navigation.

-
The examiner will say “STOP”
-
You must brake quickly and safely
-
Check mirrors before moving off again
